Saltwater pools, are they for me?
It’s a warm day, perfect for a swim in the pool. But you forgot to buy chemicals yesterday, or you didn’t add chlorine last night. This could quickly turn your pool day into a bust. If you had the chance to avoid remembering to measure the chemicals, adding them and maintaining the chlorine in your pool system, would you?
The Basics: Chlorine Generator
Basically, a chlorine generator (a.k.a. saltwater pool) sanitizes the pool water automatically with salt. This process involves using standard table salt the same way you would manually add chlorine. The big difference is that you will no longer need to buy multiple chemicals, handle and store them, manually add them and constantly test the water. You will still need to shock your pool on occasion though and testing is always important anyway for safety, but the chlorine generator simplifies pool maintenance tremendously.
Benefits beyond time and ease of use
Safety: With the fact that there will be no frequent purchasing handling or storage of dangerous chemicals, chemical spills and adding too much chlorine are eliminated. Obviously, this makes swimming in the pool and poolside activities much safer.
Increase in swimmer satisfaction: Removing chlorine from the equation also means removing the strong odor of the chemicals you previously used and the irritation of the eyes when using too few or too many of the chemicals. Hair and skin can actually stay soft since the salt chlorine generator is not nearly as drying as standard chlorine.
Swimsuits will last longer: Swimmers will appreciate the fact that their swimsuits will last much longer as chlorine can really damage the fabric combined with the sun and heat.
General water appeal: Your pool will just look that much more inviting as the water will look much cleaner and clearer.
The operation explained
The chlorine generator would be installed with your return pump system. You would add standard table salt to the pool water (about less than a teaspoon per gallon). As the salt flows through the generator, the process of electrolysis happens, and the salt is converted to pure chlorine. This chlorinated water is now distributed into the pool.
